A flood usally occurs when a large amount of water covers a space of land that is usally dry. Another way a flood can occur is when the rivers and lakes break open. It happens when a large amount of rainfall lands into the river (or lake) and pushes the banks of it causing them to break open. All the water flows down the towns and cities causing lots of damage destroying homes, buisnusses and even power lines.
Flash floods.
Flash floods form in a few hours unlike a normal flood wich takes a couple of days even weeks. A heavy downpour of rain in one place can destroy everything very fast. Some flash floods occur in deserts, the last place you would expect a flood. A flash flood is most likley to occurn in summer. When the sun's heat gets powerful it creats big thunderclouds. The thunderclouds are very big and hold lots of raindrops. When the raindrops fall fast is usally causes a flash flood witch can turn into a lovley day to a messy town.

Clouds are made out of tiny water droplets. When cooled they connect together and form bigger drops. When the drops get too heavy they fall to the ground causing large or small amounts of rainfall. The heaviest amount of rainfall comes from huge black clouds called Cumulonibus. They form when worm, moist water rises quickley. The air tumbles around the inside of the cloud. This is called turbulance witch makes the cloud look like it is boioling. The turbulance pushes the water droplets around the huge cloud witch makes it rain and can turn into a flood. It is a sure sign of heavy rain or a thunderstorm.
Living with floods
Today many people are living in an area likley to have a flood. Some archertects are begginging to to build homes that can withstand a flood but archertects say they are going to be very expencive to buy but will be worth all the money. For many years people have built homes above the water or live in floating homes such as houseboats. In South East Asia many homes are built on stilts. An archertect in england has started to build modern homes on stilts. In the netherlands floating homes are starting to get more populor. The cellar is full of air so that the house can float. The house is attached to 2 fixed poles so that it will hold it up. If you live in a place like Clorado that has the massive Hoover Dam,you don't need a house that floats or is on stilts. The Hoover Dam has a massive wall at the end to stop the flow of water rushing down to the town of Colorado. It can withstand all the water that is in the huge dam very well.
